Pink October has been planned and held in Torrebras (Bahia), with the aim of sharing information and promoting breast cancer awareness among its employees, in order to strengthen recommendations for the prevention, early diagnosis and screening of this disease.
In Brazil, 66,280 new cases of breast cancer were estimated in 2021, with an estimated risk of 61.61 cases per 100,000 women. Breast cancer also ranks first in cancer mortality among women in Brazil, with an age-adjusted mortality rate per world population for 2019 of 14.23/100,000. The highest incidence and mortality rates are found in the South and Southeast regions of Brazil.
Measures such as the one carried out by Torrebras contribute to reducing the incidence and preventing mortality among women in the country. The measures are also aligned with the company’s health and safety objectives, as well as SDG 3.
The international awareness movement for the early detection of breast cancer. Pink October, was created in the early 1990s, when the Susan G Foundation launched the symbol of breast cancer prevention, the well-known pink ribbon (Komen for the Cure) and distributed to participants of the first “Race for the Cure” held in New York (USA), and has been promoted annually ever since.
